A pole barn looks simple, which is exactly why so many of them sit in a puddle. The building itself is straightforward: embedded or bracket-mounted posts on concrete footings, girts and purlins, trusses at wide spacing, and metal roofing and siding. What separates a barn that lasts forty years from one that rots at grade and floods every spring is the site: a pad built above surrounding grade with compacted structural fill, positive drainage away on all four sides, and an apron that keeps water and mud out of the doors.

Beast Construction Inc builds the whole thing. We clear and grub the area, cut and fill the pad, place and compact structural fill, shape drainage and swales, set the footings and posts, erect the structure, install roofing, siding, trim and insulation, hang the doors, pour the slab and apron, and coordinate the electrical service. One contract, one crew responsible for whether the floor stays dry.

Post-Frame (Pole Barn) Construction

Post-frame buildings carry loads on widely spaced columns rather than continuous walls, which is why they span far and cost less per square foot than stick-framed or masonry structures. We build with treated columns on poured footings sized for the soil bearing and the roof load, laminated or solid posts depending on the design, engineered trusses at appropriate spacing, and screwed metal roofing and siding.

Options that matter more than most people expect: overhang and eave detail, gutters and downspouts routed away from the pad, ridge and eave ventilation to control condensation, an insulated or condensation-control underlayment beneath metal roofing, wainscot and closure trim at the base, and correctly sized headers over large door openings. Skimping on ventilation is the most common regret — a sealed metal building drips on everything you store in it.

Pre-Engineered Steel Buildings

Where you need clear spans beyond what post-frame handles economically, heavy crane or rack loading, greater fire resistance or a commercial appearance, a pre-engineered rigid-frame steel building is the better structure. It requires more foundation — typically continuous footings or piers with anchor bolts set to tight tolerance — which is straightforward for us because we pour concrete ourselves. We coordinate the building order, foundation, erection, insulation systems, and door and window openings.

Slabs, Doors, Utilities & Interior Finish

Slabs are a separate decision from the building, and many owners phase them. A shop slab typically wants a thickness matched to the equipment that will sit on it, thickened edges at door openings, a vapor retarder, reinforcement, control joints and a floor pitched toward the door or a drain. Doors range from standard overhead sectional units to tall RV doors, sliders, and hydraulic or bi-fold doors on hangars and shops.

We also handle electrical service and subpanels, lighting layout, water and sewer or septic connections through our underground utilities crews, insulation and interior liner panels, framed office and bathroom build-outs, mezzanines, and equipment or wash-bay drains. Access matters too — a shop you cannot back a trailer into is a garage, so we build the driveway and apron to suit the vehicles.

Permits, Engineering & Siting

Post-frame buildings still need permits, engineered plans in most jurisdictions, and compliance with wind and snow loads, setbacks, height limits and sometimes agricultural-versus-commercial use classifications. We handle plan submission and inspections, and we help site the building intelligently: prevailing wind, sun on the doors, snow shed direction away from entries and neighbors, access for the largest vehicle you will ever put in it, and room for future expansion on the gable end.

The order of operations here is not negotiable if you want a dry floor.

  1. Size & Site It

    We confirm dimensions, eave height, door sizes and use, then pick a location for drainage, access, sun and snow shed.

  2. Engineer & Permit

    Plans are engineered for local wind and snow loads, then submitted for permits with setbacks and use classification verified.

  3. Build The Pad

    Clearing, stripping, cut and fill, compacted structural fill above surrounding grade, and drainage shaped away on all sides.

  4. Set & Erect

    Footings poured, columns or anchor bolts set to layout, then trusses, girts, purlins, roofing, siding, trim and doors.

  5. Slab & Connect

    Slab and apron poured, electrical service and lighting installed, utilities connected, site graded and seeded.

Frequently Asked Questions

What owners ask before they commit to a post-frame or steel building.

Do I need a concrete slab in a pole barn?

Not always. Equipment storage, hay barns and run-in sheds often work fine on compacted stone, and many owners build the shell first and pour later. If you plan to work in the building, use a floor jack or lift, store vehicles long term, or heat it, a slab is worth doing. Tell us up front either way, because a slab planned from the start changes how we build the pad and set the posts.

How high should the eave and doors be?

Measure the tallest thing you will ever put inside and add clearance for a lift, a raised dump bed or a trailer's air conditioner. RV and equipment buildings commonly want fourteen to sixteen feet of eave height; a typical shop or garage is comfortable at twelve. Height is far cheaper to buy now than to add later, and it is the change owners most often wish they had made.

Is a post-frame building cheaper than a steel building?

Usually, for spans up to roughly sixty to eighty feet, because post-frame needs far less foundation and uses widely spaced wood columns. Pre-engineered steel becomes competitive or superior on very long clear spans, heavy crane and rack loading, tall commercial buildings, and where fire resistance or appearance matters. We price both when a project sits near the crossover point.

Why does my metal building drip inside?

That is condensation, not a leak. Warm moist air meets a cold metal roof panel and water forms on the underside. The fixes are ventilation with balanced eave intake and ridge exhaust, a condensation-control membrane or insulation on the underside of the roofing, and controlling moisture from the ground with a vapor retarder under the slab. Designing these in during construction costs a fraction of retrofitting them.

Do pole barns need permits and engineering?

In most jurisdictions, yes. Plans engineered for local wind and snow loads, zoning setbacks, height limits and use classification all apply, and agricultural exemptions vary widely by county. We submit the plans, pull the permits and schedule inspections, and confirm the rules for your specific parcel before construction starts.
